Music Videos

In the days before music videos existed, radio was the main medium for music notepromoting your song or track. Television programmes relied on a combination of live performances, interviews with musicians and bands, the chart list and input from the studio audience. Most singers mimed too.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen was the first ever music video.

A parody is a joke version of a song.

A pastiche is a serious version of a song and a copy of a style.

A cover is a copy of someone else’s song which is serious too.

The first television channel was MTV which began in America in 1981 and they promised to play music videos 24 hours a day. Buggles’ song Video Killed The Radio Star was the first music video played on MTV and people actually believed that videos killed the radios because they were a lot better than radios, or so people thought.

One band in the 80’s, A Flock Of Seagulls, never gained  popularity in the United Kingdom and they were a New Wave UK’s band.

Many movie directors and screenwriters became movie directors because they began directing music videos. For example, David Fincher directed Gone Girl, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Alien 3 and Panic Room but also directed the songs Vogue and Bad Girl by Madonna. Michael Bay directed the music video for I’d Do Anything For Love (Bit I Won’t Do That) by Meatloaf which was number one for nine whole years! He directed the movies Transformers, Pearl Harbor and the Bad Boys saga. David Lynch directed the music video for I Predict by Sparks but also the movies Wild At Heart, Mulholland Drive and more! John Landis directed Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Black or White but also the movies Twilight Zone, Spiderman 2 and Slasher. Michel Gondry directed many music videos including Go by The Chemical Brothers and Everlong by Foo Fighters as well as movies such as Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind and The Science of Sleep. Lastly, director Spike Jonze directed music videos such as Weezer’s Island In The Sun which features in the film Aquamarine and Flashing Lights by Kanye West as well as ALL the Jackass movies including Bad Grandpa.
